Pierce Quantum Pumper - Honolulu

Honolulu Quantum Pumper

The Honolulu Fire Department consists of five battalions containing 44 fire stations across the island employing over 1100 fire fighters. Engine 10 is stationed in the Aiea district and has been meticulously modelled in 1:50th scale by TWH Collectibles who have once again created an exact replica of the actual "In Use" Engine. Engine 10 is one of five designations and joins Engine 4 (Kuakini district), Engine 9 (Kakaako district), Engine 17 (Kaneohe district) and Engine 26 (Waianae district) in the TWH Model line up.

The side storage door panels have intricate handles and textured roller shutter finish but, like with the Kern and Henrico models, do not open. The printed decoration on the sides of the body are crisp and accurate with each door panel framed in silver, adding to the look of realism.

The fold down ladder holder has two clips to connect the accurate and fully functional three stage extending step ladder and once connected, the holder folds up into the travel position with the ladder stored above the roof.

The large pump panel has been authentically reproduced and is an exact replica of the full sized panel from the various printed guages, dials and knobs down to the large yellow water intake. Above the pump housing is a storage area for the flat stored hoses which have been simulated from moulded resin giving an authentic look.

Photo etched panels with tiny grill features have been used for the ventilation of the main pump housing and diamond plate textured panels have been added throughout the pump area. The large area on the top of the rear body has several compartments where more flat hoses are positioned, complete with moulded nozzles.

A separate water gun is supplied in the box and needs fitting above the pump panel housing and can be rotated through 360 degrees. Every flat surface of the model has been finished with authentic chrome looking diamond plate panels that are a striking contrast to the yellow base colour.

The TAK-4 suspension system has been accurately modelled on the model and is fully visible by turning the model over. The rear axle has a drive shaft running the length of the chassis to the Allison transmission system mounted behind the engine while air tanks for the suspension and large fuel tank are fitted to the chassis.

The main cab is hinged and can be tilted forward to reveal the fully reproduced diesel engine beneath, complete with battery compartments and exhaust pipe all visible. A small bracket fitted on each side of the chassis can be lifted up to hold the cab in the raised position.

The chromed exhaust pipe is clearly visible inside the engine compartment and water pipes have been fitted along the side of the frame to the outlet mounted into the front chromed bumper which has a hollowed out area where a rolled up hose is located.

The roof of the cab has a large, clear plastic lighting strip bar extending across the width of the cab with an air conditioning housing mounted just behind, complete with painted fan detailing. The cab windows are all made from clear plastic with intricate painting of the rubber window seals which cetainly adds to the level of realism. The chromed rear view mirrors which need fitting to the model, have a reflective surface while large chromed housings with red lenses are fitted to the front of the cab above the intricate photo-etched grill which prominently houses the Pierce logo.

Amber paint has been used to pick out the small lights cast into the cab roof and small plastic lenses have been added on the cab sides along with chromed door handles and grab rails. The cab interior has been fully replicated from the three seats in the rear compartment, which has a raised roof giving the crew more headroom to the officer and driver's compartment enclosed in a wrap around dashboard with printed dials, switches and display screen of the Command Zone computer system.

The three section plastic extension ladder can be extended just like a real thing and is stored on the fold down arm which also has several tools permanently fitted. The opposite side of the upper body has several large tube shaped storage compartments.

While the model is the centrepiece, the packaging has also been very nicely done with a printed cardboard box, complete with embossed logo holding the two piece polystyrene carton within. There is a printed leaflet which gives details on fitting the mirrors, extension ladder and stang onto the model while a small printed booklet gives details of the Honolulu Fire Department, with a map of the island showing the five main regions along with other interesting information.

The addition of a reproduced Pierce product brochure is a really nice touch which is full of pictures and information on the Pierce line of fire and rescue equipment. This added material is the icing on the cake and rounds off another exceptional model release.
